Detecting peoples primary modality, be it auditory, visual or kinesthetic is often more than just noting a phrase like: I hear you. I see what you are saying. or Feels right to me. Ask questions and watch their responses to words you use from each modality. Their eyes and less obvious words they use in descriptions also offer clues.
