Winners use the word "and" to keep positivity in statements. The word "but" negates the sentence - it still has many uses for people who respond negatively and for situations where the negative is better off diminished. Couples who think as follows: "He is messy. But that makes him more fun to eat with" do better than those without the but. placing a but in any negative can virtually wipe out the negativity.
